Dallas, Texas--Who is Monday Atigo? The former UNAA Vice President from 2013-2015, Monday Atigo earlier headed the mobilization & outreach committee for the 25th Annual UNAA Convention that was held in Dallas, Texas in 2013. He had previously served as the Secretary of the UNAA Electoral Commission of 2011. He was elected unopposed as UNAA President during the 2015 convention in New Orleans, Louisiana.
As he seeks a second term, he is faced with a formidable challenge from Dr. Daniel Kawuma who has promised to change the way the Ugandan organization is led, funded, and viewed by both its members, affiliates, and the public. Previously, incumbent Monday Atigo served as the president and treasurer of the Ugandan American Association of Greater Dallas Fort Worth (UAA-DFW). With an entrepreneurial spirit, Atigo is self-employed and previously served as the Guest Services Manager at the Omni Fort Worth Hotel Downtown. He has also served as the Assistant Front Office Manager, and Guest Services Manager at the Omni Austin Downtown Hotel, Austin Texas.
Born in Kampala, Uganda; Atigo is a graduate of Kibuli Secondary School. He attended Makerere University Kampala in 2000, before moving to the United States on an Athletic Soccer Scholarship at Alabama A&M University in 2002. He holds a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Phoenix and attended the University of the Incarnate Word, San Antonio Texas on a Soccer Scholarship where he earned his Bachelors of Business Administration (BBA) in 2006. He is happily married and is blessed with children.
Who is Daniel Kawuma? Dr. Daniel Busulwa Kawuma, 36, a resident of Maryland, USA, was introduced to the Ugandan Diaspora over a decade ago as a college student through the Uganda Association of Minnesota. To him, the community of Ugandan families became a home away from home. The kindness, hospitality, support during adversity and ingenuity of community members provided a strong foundation for him to settle in the Diaspora. Dr. Daniel Busulwa Kawuma, a resident of Maryland, USA, is currently the Pharmacy Manager at the world’s largest retail giant, Walmart, since 2014.
He also doubles as an Adjunct Faculty at Marshall University College of Pharmacy and an Experiential Education Preceptor LECOM School of Pharmacy. Dr. Kawuma is currently conducting a research Project on Safe Medication use practices in Uganda and previously engaged in the development and relevant education reform policy advocacy in Uganda in 2012-2014. Before then, he served as a Pharmacist with CVS/Caremark from 2009 – 2014.
Dr. Kawuma’s involvement in Uganda Diaspora organizations includes a recent stint as a member of the UNAA Harmonization Committee (2016; a current UNAA Committee Member in partnership with Uganda Fistula fund); and, previously, he was the UNAA Council Representative for Mid-Atlantic Region 2 (2012-2014). He serves as a Committee Member of Gwanga Mujje Washington DC and previously served as a President of Macalester College African Student Association.
Dr. Kawuma earned his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of Minnesota and is a Licensed Pharmacist by the States of Massachusetts, Maryland, Texas and Florida. He attended Macalester College for his Bachelor's Degree in Biology and had earlier earned his International Baccalaureate IB Diploma from the Red Cross Nordic United World College. Dr. Kawuma went to King's College Budo for his secondary and high school education and Budo Junior School for his primary school education in Uganda.
