In Summary: Last Friday, on Christmas, the day we celebrated the birth of Jesus Christ, we beheld and embraced the light over darkness manifested in Jesus, the Prince of peace, the King of kings, and the Lord of Lords. May we continue to shine this light beyond this holiday season

Over two thousand years ago, the angel of God appeared to the shepherds to announce the birth of the Savior, which is Christ the Lord:  “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:11). God was fulfilling a prophesy made about 700 years earlier:  “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace,” (Isaiah 9:6).

It is apparent that both the proclamation by the angel and the prophesy include a spiritual and secular message relevant to the entire human race; love. Particularly relevant to us as global citizens with East African heartbeats, we should recognize and seek to emulate Jesus who clearly demonstrated not only his love for the Lord his God but also his neighbor as he did for himself.  While this may be a tough act to follow, the key message we derive and should send, illuminate, and enact this holiday season and beyond is to love and to love no matter what.

As East Africans, especially those of us living in the Diaspora and those who are privileged and those holding and wielding power back in our respective countries of origin, this holiday season and the coming new year offer an opportunity to practice what our spiritual beliefs dictate; to engage in acts of love that are not merely thoughts and desires, but practical actions that help, serve, and impact the lives of others. It is incumbent upon us, this holiday season and beyond, to love others as Jesus did. This is the hope in every New Year. It is the hope of this coming year 2016.

We send to you our love and greetings and wish you a happy and prosperous new year.
