Events to commemorate 22 years after the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda took place on Saturday April 30, 2016 at Disciples of Christ church in Hurst, Texas. The events, organized by the Rwandan American Community in the Dallas-Fort Worth area (DFW), included prayers, a testimony by the then a 9-year old survivor, and a video clip depicting how some individuals defied the genocide perpetrators to save lives of Tutsis, underlined reconciliation processes to heal wounds, and to comfort survivors. Speeches drawing parallels between the holocaust and genocide, condemning the genocide ideology, and inspiring humanity to debunk the genocide ideology once and for all highlighted the event. Nearly a million people were massacred in approximately 100 days in Rwanda in 1994. The event was attended by over 300 people including leaders from the East African Chamber of Commerce, Kenyan, Congolese, and Burundian communities, and a board member of the Holocaust Museum of Dallas. The First Counsel at the Rwanda Embassy in Washington DC, Mr. Lawrence Manzi presided over the events on behalf of the Ambassador. Details to follow.
